In November 2014, the Department for Education published guidance on promoting fundamental British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain.  

The British values are:

• Democracy
• Individual liberty
• The rule of law
• Mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith

Democracy

How do we promote democracy in school?

Children have many opportunities for their voices to be heard. Pupil voice questionnaires are completed regularly so children are able to put forward their views about relevant issues. Pupils also have the opportunity to run for School Council and the Eco Team through a democratic electoral process. Children also learn about democracy through the curriculum.

Individual Liberty

How do we promote individual liberty?

Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make the correct choices safely through provision of a safe environment and empowering education. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedom. They are provided with advice and opportunities to make independent choices.

The Rule of Law

How do we promote the rule of law?

The importance of laws and rules, whether they are those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced.  Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws and rules. When employed effectively, they achieve positive outcomes for the whole school community. All children are aware of our school rules and expectations for behaviour and as a result behaviour is good across the school.  Visits and workshops from the Police, Fire Service etc. are embedded in our practice and help reinforce this message.

How do we promote mutual respect and tolerance?

As a Christian community, mutual respect is one of our core school values. Pupils learn that their behaviours have an impact on themselves and others. All members of the school community treat each other with respect as we live out our associated Bible verse:

‘Do to others as you would have them do to you.’

Our local community is socially, ethnically and culturally diverse and many of our pupils are of other world faiths. As a Church of England school, we are fully aware of the importance of promoting tolerance of different faiths and beliefs. Our RE curriculum teaches all world faiths and children belonging to these faiths are encouraged to share their beliefs and rituals. We also visit different places of worship.
